A Wonderful Milestone

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, I wake up on Thursdays and read about the latest unemployment fallout. In short, in the last nine weeks, 40,000,000 people in the United States have lost their jobs. And with freelance writing being a tenuous thing already, I wondered when the day might come that my clients would let me (and likely everyone else) go. For the most part, I was good about pushing these thoughts out of my head and getting down to work. Even so, I couldn’t stop brooding about a future Thursday when I would be part of that week’s horde of unemployed.

And then today happened.

Long story short, my main client offered me a part-time job to do the exact same work for the exact same pay. On the surface, it doesn’t seem like much, but it finally provides me a much-needed sliver of job security. I’ll still have Broderick Writer LLC and my other clients, but things will change.

It all seems a bit unreal. How did I get a job in the worst economic climate since the Great Depression? The person who offered me the position said, “thank yourself,” referring to all the good work I had done for them as a freelancer over the last 33 months.

So, I want to go back and thank that younger me, someone who, against all odds, picked up his life after the Tubbs Fire and persisted.

Thank you, Thomas. Thank you so much.
